Are you struggling with council tax debt?
If so, you’ve come to the right place, we could help you.
There are many reasons why you might end up missing a council tax payment; maybe you’ve had to cover an unexpected bill that’s wiped out your savings, you’re struggling with the increased cost of living, or you’ve simply forgotten the date.
Council tax debt works differently to other unsecure debts. When the council are owed money, they will quickly apply for a county court judgement (CCJ). Once this has been granted, they will immediately instruct bailiffs to visit your property to repossess goods to the amount of the outstanding debt amount.
Can council tax debt be written off?
For people dealing with money issues, paying council tax can be very challenging, especially since it is a priority debt. But there is help available out there through a variety of debt management solutions.
If you’re struggling with council tax it is possible that it may be written off through a debt management solution such as an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA). However, each council has its own policy.
A formal debt solution like an IVA will freeze interest and charges on your debts, protect you from legal action and stop your creditors from contacting you.
